SITE PLANNING

JOURNEY TO SELF SUFFICIENCY: THE MEADOWS, EDINBURGH

This project is the culmination of an 11-week course in Site Planning at MITx. The course focused on the sustainable development of urban and rural landscapes through a social, environmental and economic lens.

For the course I chose to redevelop the site of the Meadows Pavilion in Edinburgh. I chose to create a site with a cyclical layout ranging from spaces to AID DEVELOPMENT through sensory and hands-on facilities, PROVIDING OPPORTUNITIES through the provision of start-up spaces and Housing First units and finally encouraging SELF SUFFICIENCY with allotments and spaces for reflection and meeting.

A primary concern for my design was the safety of women and children. The site is centred around a raised walkway divided between pedestrians and cyclists. It is well lit and raised and the surrounding area is low rise to increase the safety of the user especially at night. There are other, less direct routes across the site for leisurely travel.
