REUSE THE FALLEN CHURCH: CHIESA DIRUTA
LA CHIESA RISORTA
Chiesa Diruta is a 15th-century Catholic Church built in the Italian town of Grottole. The church has been subjected to destabilising earthquakes and fires yet it retains its cultural and religious significance.
Reuse the Fallen Church set the task of reusing the space as a Concert Hall for the people of Grottole and to encourage tourism to the quiet, agricultural area.
Our design resurrects the church to its former glory by reinterpreting the stained glass oculus and gothic vaulted ceiling which once crowned the church. The material choice is earthy and complementary of the remaining structure. The terracotta tiles will be produced by nearby potters thus supporting local industries and grounding the music hall within local life and traditions.
